What should you do when your eyelid creases are uneven, making you feel less confident and difficult to apply makeup?
Having large, round eyes with symmetrical eyelids is something everyone desires. Besides enhancing appearance, it also boosts confidence and makes the face look brighter and more charming.
However, having uneven eyelids or a double eyelid on only one side can be a source of concern for many. It may affect self-confidence, make makeup application difficult, and even impact overall facial expression and personality.
But why do some people have uneven eyelids, and can this condition be corrected? Let’s find out.
What is a double eyelid on only one side?
Double eyelids are formed by a natural fold on the upper eyelid. a small crease that makes the eyes look bigger and more defined. The condition known as 'uneven eyelids' or 'asymmetrical double eyelids' refers to having one eye with a visible eyelid crease while the other is monolid or has a hidden fold. This results in asymmetry between the two eyes, which becomes more noticeable when looking straight ahead.
Causes of uneven eyelids?
For individuals experiencing eyelid asymmetry and seeking an effective, targeted correction, the first step is to understand its underlying cause. The most common causes of uneven eyelids include the following:
1. Genetic factors
Some people are born with slight differences in their eyelid structure or eye shape — something that often runs in the family.
2. Ptosi Repair
When the eyelid muscle weakens, one eye may droop lower. a condition called Ptosis, which can make the eyes look uneven or affect vision.Ptosis can be classified into two main types:
- Congenital Ptosis : Occurs when the levator muscle, which is responsible for lifting the upper eyelid, does not develop properly at birth. This results in a drooping eyelid that has been present since childhood.
- Acquired Ptosis: Develops later in life due to age-related muscle degeneration, trauma to the eyelid muscle or nerve, or underlying medical conditions that weaken the eyelid muscles over time
3.Age related skin laxity
As we age, the skin and fat around the eyes lose firmness, causing sagging that makes the eyelid crease fade or disappear.
4.Daily habits and lifestyle factors
Simple habits like rubbing your eyes or not getting enough sleep can weaken your eyelid muscles. Because uneven eyelids over time.
5.Eyelid Surgery or Trauma
Uneven eyelids can result from past surgery or trauma, especially if scar tissue forms or the crease was made at the wrong height.
In addition, severe eye accidents or injuries can also affect muscles and tissues, leading to structural deformities and asymmetry of the eyelids. Correcting this requires repeat surgery by a specialist to accurately and precisely analyze and repair the damaged structures.

The Impaact of Having uneven or single double eyelied creases on daily life.
Although having uneven eyelid creases or double eyelids on only one side is not a serious medical condition, it can still affect daily life in various ways both physically and emotionally.
- Aesthetic concerns and self-confidence:
Asymmetrical eyes can make the gaze appear less lively or balanced. This often leads to self-consciousness about one’s appearance, potentially affecting confidence and social interactions over time. - Difficulty with makeup application:
Uneven eyelid creases can make it challenging to apply eyeliner or false eyelashes evenly, especially for those who rely on eye makeup to enhance symmetry. - Obstruction of vision:
In cases related to ptosis (drooping eyelids), the sagging eyelid may partially block the upper visual field, impacting activities that require clear vision, such as driving.
How to fix uneven or single double eyelids?
Effective correction of unilateral double eyelid should consider the severity of the condition and the underlying cause. Commonly used methods include the following:
1.Using makeup techniques to create a temporary illusion of symmetry.
This is often the first choice for many people since it is simple, convenient, and non-invasive. It is suitable for those with mild or temporary eyelid asymmetry, as it helps improve appearance without the need for medical procedures.
2.Non-surgical correction.
such as stimulating or adjusting the eyelid muscles to improve balance. This method helps slow down sagging and strengthens the muscles around the eyes. It's suitable for those who want to take care of themselves to prevent or delay the development of drooping eyelids in the future. It consists of two main approaches:
Open your eyes as wide as possible and hold for 10 seconds, then close your eyes gently and relax the muscles.\
- Repeat this exercise 5–10 times to help strengthen the eyelid muscles.
3. Double eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Double eyelid surgery is considered the most permanent and precise method, addressing the root cause of the problem. It's ideal for those with significant issues that impact daily life. The doctor will carefully assess the structure of each eye to select the most suitable surgical technique. Common techniques include the long incision technique (for correcting ptosis), the short incision technique, and the minimally invasive (sutureless) technique.
